State-run oil Oman Petroleum Development (PDO) has announced the discovery of a giant gas reservoir whose potential will boost the country’s economy and sustainable growth.
The new find located in the Mabrouk gasfield, in the Garif formation in northern Oman, boasts a reservoir of 4 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of recoverable gas and 112 million barrels of condensates, reports say.
The sultanate produced in 2017 an estimate of 4.74 billion of oil and condensates.
The new discovery according to PDO’s Managing Director, Raoul Restucci “will give a boost to economic growth in Oman and help meet rising gas demand from residential, commercial and industrial customers.”
“Once again, our exploration directorate has performed admirably in challenging conditions to identify, discover and appraise a major hydrocarbon find, which will make a substantial contribution to Oman’s sustainable development,” he said.
Efforts to exploit the new reservoir have already begun, reports say. Five wells have already been drilled in the Mabrouk field, all of which have already encountered gas, Muscat Daily reported.
One of the five is already producing and PDO is working to launch production at a second, the daily added.
