Tunisian authorities blamed “foreign elements” for the assassination of a Hamas drone expert in the coastal city of Sfax on Thursday.
Mohamed Zaouari, 49, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at the wheel of his car outside his home in Tunisia’s second city, Sfax.
“The investigations concerning the assassination of Tunisian citizen Mohamed Zaouari and the latest findings have proven that foreign elements were involved,” the government said in a Facebook post.
The Tunisian national was described by Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, as a drone expert. The group, which fought three wars with Israel since 2008, promised reprisal for the murder of the 49-year old Tunisian national allegedly by Israeli agents.
“Qassam Brigades mourns the martyr of Palestine, martyr of the Arab and Muslim nation, the Qassam leader, engineer and pilot Mohamed Zaouari, who was assassinated by Zionist treacherous hands on Thursday in Sfax,” the armed group said on its website.
