Khalil Al-Mohannadi, President of the Qatar Table Tennis Association, will head the Asian Table Tennis Union (following his unopposed election Sunday in Doha).
Al-Mohannadi becomes the sixth President of the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU).
He follows Japan’s Rizo Kawakami (1972-1974), Hisao Kido (1974-1976) and Atsushi Goto (1976-2001) who were succeeded by China’s Li Furong (2001-2009) and Cai Zhenhua (2009–2021), the Asian table tennis governing body notes. The ATTU includes 44 member associations: 8 East Asia, 10 Southeast Asia, 7 South Asia, 12 West Asia, and 7 Central Asia, during the election cycle from 2021-2025.
The Qatari citizen has also been since 2001 member of governing body. He was until his election Deputy President after assuming the role two times; 2001-2003 and 2009-2021.
Under Al Mohannadi, Qatar welcomed the Asian Championships in 2000, the World Team Championships in 2004, as well as the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Star Awards Evening and ITTF World Tour Grand Finals in 2016.
More recently in September, Doha hosted the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender tournament and is the current home for the 2021 ITTF-ATTU Asian Championships.
