The United Arab Emirates is planning to build a $ 2.9 billion midfield terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport to keep up with rapidly growing number of travelers and air traffic.
The new terminal, to be operational in 2017, will be able to handle up to 20 million passengers per year with the options of increasing this capacity to 40 millions. The airport is currently serving over 11 million passengers and 53 airlines connecting all continents.
The brand-new 700,000m² terminal, to be built by a consortium, will include parking stands for 65 aircrafts including the Airbus A-380, terminal roadways, connecting roads to Abu Dhabi/Dubai highway, and utility plants.
It will also have 136 security screening lanes, a check-in system capable of handling around 8,500 passengers per hour, 165 conventional counters, 48 self-service kiosks and luggage system designed to process over 19,000 bags per hour with over 22 km of conveying lines and 10 reclaim carousels.
