Egypt is planning to inaugurate its New Administrative Capital, NAC, before the end of this year after a delay caused by the pandemic.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, reports say, told a cabinet meeting March 08 that government services are set to start and the mock inauguration is scheduled for August, when after government employees are relocated to the NAC.
Madbouly also indicated that the experimental operation aims to ensure all facilities at the NAC’s buildings are available before the official inauguration.
Launched in 2015, NAC covers 700-square-kilometers and is located 60 kilometers from Cairo in the Cairo-Suez and Cairo-Ain Sokhna roads. The city will house 10 ministerial complexes grouping together 34 ministries, in addition to the headquarters of the cabinet and House of Representatives.
More than $50 billion have been invested in the new city in the desert which will be connected to the rest of the country by high-speed railway and monorail projects.
6.5 million people are expected to live in residential places also built to house about 52,300 government employees. Scheduled last year, the ceremony suffered a delay due to the pandemic.
