European Parliament Greenlights €4 Billion Second Instalment in EU’s €7.4 Billion Aid Package to Egypt

The European Parliament has approved the release of the second €4 billion tranche in a broader €7.4 billion financial aid package for Egypt, marking a significant step in reinforcing the EU’s strategic partnership with the North African country.

The vote, which took place on 1 April 2025, saw overwhelming support with 452 in favour, 182 against, and 40 members abstaining. This follows the first €1 billion tranche, disbursed earlier in January under the same arrangement.

The €7.4 billion package, part of an agreement signed in March 2024, is designed to support Egypt’s economic stability through budget assistance, investment guarantees, and technical support. This funding aims to aid Egypt in addressing its economic challenges while recognizing its key role in regional security and stability. The EU’s backing highlights Egypt’s strategic importance, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Africa.

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the European Parliament’s decision, describing it as a reaffirmation of the long-term strategic ties between Egypt and the EU. The Ministry emphasized that this move acknowledges the country’s efforts to promote regional stability and its vital role in the Middle East and Southern Mediterranean. The release of the second tranche is now awaiting final procedural steps within the EU, which are anticipated to take several weeks.
