Wihdat sports club, a handball team from Jordan announced Wednesday its withdrawal from an international handball competition in the United Arab Emirates because of the participation of an Israeli team, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) reports.
“Officially, the Wihdat club announces that will not participate in the Al-Ain handball championship, #no_normalization,” the club said on Twitter.
The tournament is scheduled to take place 18-28 July in the UAE’s Al-Ain, with Arab, Asian and African handball clubs taking part. Jordan and Israel established diplomatic ties from 1994 through 26 October 1994 peace treaty. Wihdat sports club’s decision won them praises from Jordanian and Palestinian activists on social media networks, MEMO notes.
