Emirates’s catering service, Emirates Flight Catering (EFC), and Dubai South have agreed to build the world’s largest vertical farm for an investment put $40 million.
The vertical farm per the collaboration agreement, will cover 130,000 square feet for a total investment of $40 million.
The project will be carried out by joint venture, Crop One Holdings, and will be located at the aviation district of the mega city.
The construction of the facility to commence in November will take 12 months. Upon completion, the first products are expected to be delivered to Emirates Flight Catering’s customers, including 105 airlines and 25 airport lounges, in December 2019, UAE state-owned news agency, WAM reports.
The farm when in full swing will produce 2,700 kg of high-quality, herbicide-free and pesticide-free leafy greens daily, using 99 percent less water than traditional farms.
Emirates looks through the project to go green as the proximity of the farm to the point of consumption will significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation.
