The UAE has been ranked at the world’s largest donor of developmental aid relative to its national income, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said in a recent report.
The UAE donated aid worth $4.24 billion in 2016, accounting for 1.21 % of the country’s gross national income (GNI), ahead of Norway, which contributed 1.12% of its GNI, Luxembourg (1%) and Sweden (0.94%).
The UAE provided its aid mostly to Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco, Sudan and Pakistan. The main sectors of the UAE’s bilateral disbursements were program assistance, economic infrastructure (energy and transport) and humanitarian aid.
The UAE provides its assistance mostly in the form of grants.
